Federation homes are as sought after now as they were in the late 19th and early 20th century. Full of character, charm and a sense of history, they are a popular choice for homeowners.
But when it comes to painting a Federation house should you choose traditional colours or go with something more modern?
Heritage Colours
The majority of Australians who own a Federation house tend choose a timeless exterior colour scheme. Heritage colours such as creams, reds and greens reflect the home’s past and these colours suit both brick and weatherboard style Federation houses.
Often a heritage paint scheme is the only choice because homes of historical significance are protected. This affects what you can do in terms of changes to the exterior and what paint colours you use. If you’re not sure, check with your local council as the rules about paint colours may be more relaxed if there are newer homes in the area.
Using a mix of neutrals can be a good compromise, but if the home has a red brick or terracotta roof tiling then a white with a beige undertone is best so it won’t look yellow against the brick or tile.
Contemporary colour schemes
If you’re not restricted by a heritage status, or red brick and tile, then weatherboard Federation homes are well suited to contemporary colour schemes. Consider a cheery white and yellow exterior, or an accent of blue contrasted with white and soft grey, to create a romantic and nostalgic feel. It’s recommended that you stick with just two or three paint colours to keep it simple, or the classic white-on-white.
Highlighting Character Features
Federation houses have unique architectural features so highlighting these with an accent colour is a great way to bring them out. Try to find a balance between picking out elegant details and making them too conspicuous. Blue and grey tones in brickwork can be reflected in the fretwork, and using a charcoal paint colour here can look great.
It’s recommended to avoid painting eaves white as they show up the dirt. The general rule of thumb for the eaves is to choose a lighter colour or quarter strength from the main wall colour.
Roof Colour
Roof colours can be tricky so it’s a good idea to choose your roof colour first before the colour for the walls or trims. Terracotta and brown roof tiles go well with taupes, warm greys and creams. A light grey roof is the easiest to match colour wise.
Front Door
Highlighting the front door gives a Federation house a focal point and makes a personality statement. Some on trend colours are teal green, yellow, black and royal blue. If you become tired of it you can always repaint it in the season’s latest colour. A great backdrop wall colour for a bright front door is grey, because it’s neutral and goes with anything.
